YUMMY DELUXE - ADELAIDE FRINGE REVIEW

24 Feb 2019

HAVE A TASTE OF YUMMY!

Written by Maria Dizazzo

YUMMY DELUXE is 60 minutes of guaranteed delight, comedy and sex appeal. Blending burlesque, cabaret, drag and circus performances into one, it is truly an eclectic femme extravaganza.

Held at Garden of Unearthly Delights in a venue appropriately called ‘The Box’, YUMMY begins with a high-energy group dance to Janelle Monae’s glorious hit, ‘Make Me Feel’. The talented cast was hell-bent on entertaining everyone in the room, dancing along to every beat and setting the bar high for the night.

The fabulous hostess with the mostess, Valerie Hex, welcomed the evening with an acknowledgment to the Kaurna people, the original owners of the land. Valerie lavished the night with show-stopping outfit after outfit, tongue-in-cheek social commentary, and encouraged the audience to unleash the femme within you.

Scaled yummy 2019 2

The first act of the night, the enigmatic Zelia Rose, named the #1 Burlesque Artist Worldwide, dazzled with a glittery black and white ensemble, high ponytail and lashes for days. Recently touring with the maverick of the burlesque world Dita Von Teese, Zelia struts her stuff onstage proving why she really is #1.

Hula hoop and pole dancing sensation, Hannie Helsden, amazed the crowd with her nimbleness. Twirling one hoop after the next till they spun like a giant slinky around her body, the audience roared, and she gave her best wide-mouthed smile.

The stunning Jandruze stepped out in a risqué leather ensemble and showed us how to really make sandwiches, one layer at a time, motioning an audience member on-stage to complete the dish.

Joni in the Moon and her powerhouse pipes rung out the night, the Perth singer hit some impressive notes that truly amplified the room. I took a photo with the electric lady after the show, to which she said, “I’m singing right now, I’m singing!”

Expert trapeze artist Jarrod Dewey, the newest addition to YUMMY, had true endurance. Twisting into unbelievable positions with ease, all the while in the most sensational hot-red stiletto heels.

The YUMMY cast engaged the audience from beginning to end. Encouraging us to stomp our feet and clap our hands, and most importantly, teaching us how to truly slay. If you’re not a fan of a provocative cabaret, it may not be for you, but this multi-award-winning show can entertain even the tamest of audience members. At the end of the night, the crowd jumped up for a well-deserved standing O, ending the night with a bang.

YUMMY DELUXE is entertaining, fun, and definitely not one to miss this Fringe season! Tickets and more information are available at the Adelaide Fringe Festival’s official website here.
