Michelle Prak is an Adelaide icon in her own right, with one of the most prominent PR profiles of our city and a working history spanning decades, this absolute professional knows a thing or two about the glamour and scandal of the media industry.

So it's no surprise (let's be honest, we've been dying for this) that Michelle has officially self-published her first novel "Goodbye Newsroom", following the lives of two journo sisters who decide it's time to launch their own online news site.

"Sometimes, your personal life makes the best news story of all …

Leap into the frantic and funny world of sisters Anna and Holly, out-of-work journalists who launch their own news site.

Old-school reporter Anna is made redundant from her newspaper job, while social-savvy writer Holly resigns from a women’s website. Holly enlists Anna to help her take on her old boss, but the sisters clash when Holly insists on sharing Anna’s romantic calamities for clicks.

Will they stick together and make their enterprise work – buoyed by their loyal sidekicks and the excitement of new love – or will they be a big fail?

A-list parties and influencers.

Trolls and hashtags.

And a luxurious trip to Uruguay...grab Goodbye Newsroom today!"

We were able to sit down with Michelle and ask her all of our burning questions about Goodbye Newsroom - dive into the exclusive goss below!

What is "Goodbye Newsroom" all about?

Goodbye Newsroom is a ‘rom-com’ about two female journalists – sisters Anna and Holly. It has some very modern themes.

Many of us would have noticed that more journalists – like those at BuzzFeed – are losing their jobs, and at the same time, ‘influencers’ are carving out their own businesses. Goodbye Newsroom explores that through the eyes of two sisters, Anna and Holly, both journalists.

Old-school reporter Anna is made redundant from her newspaper job, while social-savvy writer Holly resigns from a women’s website. Holly enlists Anna to help her take on her old boss and set up a rival news site. But the sisters clash when Holly insists on sharing Anna’s romantic calamities for clicks.

There’s plenty of fun, including Anna taking her first influencer trip – to Uruguay. In fact, that’s where the book begins, and it’s not the only exciting assignment Anna is sent on (or fumbles through).

Goodbye Newsroom also has plenty of references to social media, including a troll who stalks Holly throughout much of the book and romance – found on Instagram!

What are your favourite parts of your two leading characters, Anna and Holly?

Anna and Holly are both likable, but very different. Older sister Anna is more focused on a traditional, stable newspaper job. She has largely ignored social media and thinks it’s frivolous. After she’s sacked from her newsroom, she loses a lot of confidence, wants to hide from the world, and throughout the book she is frequently adrift and nervous about her future. My favourite aspect of Anna is her ultimate willingness to learn and change.

Younger sister Holly is more energetic and a real go-getter. She’s confident in her own abilities, a digital native, and more than willing to work long hours to get what she wants. Holly can be hot-headed and impetuous, which makes for some funny scenes throughout the book. But she’s also nervous about whether her business will work, whether she can pay wages to her new team, and desperate to show her critics that she can succeed. I like Holly’s drive and ability to deliver on an idea instantly!

How have your own experiences shaped "Goodbye Newsroom"?

I’ve packed so many of my own experiences into the novel! I was one of South Australia’s first full-time social media consultants (if not the first), I’m a PR consultant, and I’ve worked and socialised with many journalists over the years. A lot of these experiences have been threaded through the novel – which I also like to think of as #careerporn for some readers! I’ve also worked in tourism, which was an inspiration for sending Anna on her influencer jaunt to Uruguay – although sadly, I’ve never been there (I have discovered, however, through research, that Uruguay is one glamorous and gorgeous place!).

Like Holly, I’ve set up my own business, and I love working for myself. Without this background, I don’t think I could have built the sisters’ story.

Why is this book so relatable for young professional women?

For a gazillion reasons!

It’s set in this modern era of creating your own business. It has a very entrepreneurial spirit, which I see in a lot of young professional women.

Anna and Holly are independent, they don’t ask others for permission, they make their own working hours and routines, and they rely on a few close friends to keep them going.
Holly likes to share her life online in authentic live streams, and she’s interested in other people, too. Their work lives and social lives can be frantic, but much of it is organised via their phones.

They’re adaptable – Holly, in particular, can bounce back when things go wrong. Even if she has to ‘explode’ during a setback she quickly regains focus.

And if the day has been particularly tough, they like to dance or have cocktails – even if it’s a weeknight ;)

The Marina Pier in Glenelg has your newest brunch spot sorted with the official launch of the Breakfast menu at The Wharf, Glenelg!

Nestled perfectly only a short walk away from major tourist destination, Moseley Square, The Wharf has been a staple foodie destination for years, known for their casual dining options and amazing view of the marina and beach.

Cracking into an ever-loved past time... brunch, The Wharf is joining the ranks of Aussie culture faves and launching their first ever Breakfast Menu!

With seating for over 150 people, The Wharf has started offering breakfast over the weekends from 8 am - 11am. With the winter chill coming through down by the coast, there's now no reason not to nestle yourself in at The Wharf and fill yourself up with a hot breakfast while enjoying your weekend.

The Wharf has an extensive breakfast menu on offer, and they've done the basics extremely well. No wanky quinoa porridges or deconstructed iced-coffees here. Just good, delicious, breakfast favourites that beg for you to walk in and devour.

While you're there, make use of their amazing coffee (cappuccino one sugar, anyone?!) or even order yourself a cheeky mimosa because hey, you've worked hard this week haven't you, you deserve this!

My favourite menu item (and what I had the privilege of devouring on the day!) is the Eggs Benedict - which I ordered with a side of smashed avocado because I'm living the millennial dream.

Thank you to Anna-Louise from JLL and The Wharf for hosting

Glitz, glamour, and a venue to challenge the likes of Soho House in NYC.

The Loft Adelaide’s Intimate Opening Night provided a sophisticated and stylish venue, suave tunes and a bar full of drinks to delight. Adelaide’s newest events venue brings a whole new level of upscale simplicity to the heart of the city; housing four beautiful rooms rich with history. The Loft Adelaide’s Intimate Opening Night allowed guests to take a peek into this timeless hidden gem in the heart of the CBD in what once was the Tattersalls Club.

Being whisked off our feet on a tour through the four architecturally sound rooms, full to the brim with chic dĂ©cor, we were able to mingle with other guests and take advantage of the evening’s photo booth supplied by Hashtag Insta Prints. Tucked away in a separate room adjacent is a fully-stocked Cocktail Bar, which is included in all Main Loft bookings.

For those who go all out, the entire venue can also be booked out exclusively for up to 230 people. Image result for little movie

Little is a comedic movie, based on a woman who one day, wakes up in the body of her teen self; it’s like a flipped take on the movie, Big, with an adult being transformed back into a young child, to help her learn some important life lessons.

Jordan Sanders is a demanding and driven executive, who is making life difficult for her personal assistant, April. When April reaches her wit's end, a magic spell causes Jordan to wake up in the body of a 13-year-old teen child. Now, April is the only one that young Jordan has, as she attempts to balance an important work presentation with the awareness of being an adult back in middle school.

The comedic aspect of the movie largely relies on "oh-no-she-didn't" shock value that only intensifies once Jordan is turned into a teen. It's intended to be a comeuppance to put an odious 38-year-old woman into the body of a young teen, however, viewers instead spend a couple of hours with a smirking 8th-grade smug.

Little seems to be aimed at Millennials. The poster uses a big yellow font, meaning parents may likely interpret it as a child-friendly movie for families. Realistically, children may not understand the nuances of the comedy, and each child may draw differing conclusions from the movie.

The movie’s release date is the 12th of April this year. Most cinemas will be playing it, so why not buy a bucket of buttery popcorn, some drinks, and check it out for yourself.

Thank you to Universal Pictures Australia for the invite!

There are not many places in Adelaide that scream sophistication and fabulousness at every turn. I am so happy to announce that our very own Eastside has officially re-launched their own corner for glam competition - The Feathers.

The Feathers Hotel Precinct has been around for a while (and has always been glam), yet they have recently refurbished select areas of the precinct to offer Burnside Mumms a comprehensive dining, drinking, and lounging experience.

Adorned with lush greenery cascading from the shelves, the Garden Bar features an impressive spirit range with premium tequila being a highlight, banquet seating, warm pendant lighting, tall windows, and large smoked mirrors, with contemporary Georgian highlights to finish off the opulent garden aesthetic.

Adjacent to the Greenhouse Restaurant is the Lounge – a luxe, cozy and inviting space, complete with velvet low-slung seating. It offers a signature drinks list and its very own specialised bites menu.

Refurbishments for the Greenhouse Restaurant, Garden Bar and Lounge started in June 2018. Carlo Panozzo of Folland Panozzo Architects, Interior Designer Claire Kneebone and Matthews Hospitality Creative Director Sarah Matthews designed the new fit-out, with the cost of refurbishment totaling $1.2 million.

Greenhouse Restaurant

The Greenhouse Restaurant is a sophisticated space offering an impressive dining experience in a chic and elegant atrium- style space. An exciting menu with British heritage that takes inspiration from the culinary experiences arising from the British Empire’s forays into Southeast Asia. Designed by Executive Chef Luke Brabin, the food dances along the spice trails of Singapore, China, and Malay and highlights produce from SA’s best local suppliers.

Garden Bar

Facing west, the new Garden Bar is an uplifting space for those wishing to entertain and be entertained. The room with its feature bar is adorned with lush greenery cascading from the shelves that feature an amazing array of unique and hard to find spirits. gins, vodkas and white rums are the flavour and there is an impressive range of tequila that is celebrated by the talented bartenders. There is also a house sangrita (tequila chaser) that features 24 secret ingredients. Cocktails and moreish snacks are the order around the banquet seating, warm pendant lighting, tall windows, large smoked mirrors, and contemporary Georgian highlights finish off the opulent garden aesthetic.

Lounge

Located adjacent to the Greenhouse is the Lounge – a cozy, inviting and luxe space open for drinks and snacks. The Lounge has its own specialised small bites menu, with a contemporary offering best accompanied by our signature drink list. The low- slung seating invites you to linger and the bar offer is anchored heavily in the darker side of things. Sipping whiskeys, rums and cognacs are the stars on the shelves and the bartenders are keen to have you swirling something smooth as you settle into the velvet lounges and lose track of time.

Thank you to Little Lion PR for inviting The Iconic Blonde to the VIP Launch of Feathers.

I don't think there's anything more that I enjoy after a long week than sitting down with my friends, eating good food, drinking good wine and talking for hours. That's why I'm so SO excited for the STREET - Asian Fusion event that's happening this weekend with Tasting Australia!

I have two favourite places in Adelaide, the East End (Which you can find me down nearly every weekend) and the Central Markets/Chinatown. My family have a tradition to head down to Gouger St every Friday morning to wander around the markets, people watch/drink iced chocolate's at Charlie's Place, and walk around Chinatown to find the silliest things possible to buy.

Moments like those are why I personally find it SO exciting that the new Chinatown Plaza redevelopment (of the food court!) is not only that it's open till 9pm on most nights, but that it's joined forces with TASTING AUSTRALIA to bring us an amazing Asian street food experience.

South Australia's 'kings of Asian fusion' will collaborate for one night only serving up the ultimate Asian food experience. In the heart of Chinatown, explore the redeveloped, luxurious Chinatown Plaza.

Expect a menu that will delight the tastebuds - bottomless plates await in the buzzing food vendor hub. Try celebrated street food from the Asian nations; drunken prawns, Cheung fun, curry fish balls, tofu, steamed eel in black bean sauce, squid and octopus tentacles, freshly handmade Langman (noodles), Kao Rou, crispy fried chicken, dumplings, duck and so much more. Ticket includes all the food you can eat (in your allocated sitting) and one drink from Tomich Wines on arrival.

My top four favourite things about this event includes:
1) It's affordable and this a big one for the Tasting Australia program. For the ticket price $73.47 (inc’s booking fee) you get a glass of wine on arrival followed by an all you can eat dinner - it's great value for a Saturday night out in the CBD.

2) The menu focuses is on delivering Asian flavours - something that has long been lacking on Tasting Australia program!

3) The food is approachable and appeals to all ages particularly being street food inspired. There will be some dishes that may challenge the palate but food will be coming all night, so if one dish doesn't tickle your fancy - the next one definitely will!

4) It's an event for the people, for the peoples' tummies - Haha!

Grab your friends, book your tickets HERE (just search the event), and I'll see you Saturday night!
Thank you for having us to experience the menu, Be Young PR!

Calling all Adelaide musos! Are you an emerging musician, performer or industry member in the local music scene? Do you want to build up your contacts list and meet fellow like-minded creatives? Then EXCHANGE was just the event for you!

Brought to you by the talented minds behind Music SA and The Young Henrys, EXCHANGE was a Music SA Networking Workshop presented at the Chateau Apollo on Tuesday 26 March.

Music SA General Manager Lisa Bishop said that EXCHANGE is a new initiative that enables members of the local music industry to connect, network, collaborate and share with each other.

Originally established in 1997, Music SA is a not-for-profit organisation that works in conjunction with the Music Development Office and receives major funding from the South Australian Government through Arts SA.

Music SA provides a number of programs to promote, support and develop the South Australian music scene with the help of funding from the City of Adelaide Council, AHA (SA Branch) APRA AMCOS and the Live Music Events Fund.

Ms. Bishop said that with the support of major organisations, generous sponsors and philanthropists, Music SA is able to “provide [musicians] with free services, help professionalise music careers and assist in networking”.

The Chateau Apollo provided a welcoming atmosphere where local members of the South Australian music scene were provided invaluable networking opportunities over a sip of Young Henry's beer, Yalumba wine and a slice of pizza.

Local musos were introduced to the expansive team behind Music SA on stage, whilst several industry professionals ranging from radio presenters to festival programmers were also present on the night.

Thank you so much to Music SA and Young Henrys for inviting us and allowing local Radeladian musos to quite literally “exchange” business cards, inspiration and creativity all evening long.
