Women of Adelaide rejoice! 


Lunch'n With The Ladies has landed and are hosting their first ever event this March which is offering a guilt-free day out, an excuse to dress up, and the opportunity to expand your GIRL GANG!

The goal is simple, bring the women of Adelaide together at a beautiful venue, they'll provide the BEST food, drinks and most of all... the opportunity for you to meet beautiful and empowering people together all in one place. 

Included in the ticket price is a fun afternoon of food, two drinks of your choice 


Lunch'n With The Ladies is the brainchild of Chloe, known for her popular family-oriented Instagram, @mum.wife.and.life, who created the event in order to give women in Adelaide an enticing and open opportunity to network and meet other like-minded individuals in our beautiful city. 

All women are encouraged to attend, with a special focus on mothers, people coming by themselves, and women in business.

Scaled walk of shame

Eleanor Conway is a self-professed ex-party girl. Now sober, her current lifestyle is very different from her days of binge-drinking, drug taking, and tinder-fulled sex romps.

Being as the main crutch in her comedic delivery is yelling and/or mimicking sexual positions (mostly in unison), followed by a wide-eyed stare at the audience to try and provoke forced laughter, there is relatable content buried within the set which was often lost in the delivery.

SPARKKE at The Whitmore is the on-trend, and not afraid to channel glamour pub, that's showing Adelaide just how to do things a little bit differently. 

There are a lot of things about bar and pub culture that are unconsciously gendered and geared towards a traditionally masculine way of life. I know this is supposed to just be a review, but it seems the Fringe shows I really enjoy are coming with more of a social commentary than just a star rating. 

Did you know that women weren't legally allowed to drink in pubs until 1967? (and gender segregation still occurred well into the 70s). Just over 50 years ago, something our grandmas (or even mothers) would have dealt with directly, was a law that we can clearly see today that has shaped the social-consciousness of pub culture. The phrase "having women at the table" is all too relevant, and the lack of consideration to women (or non-binary folk) is often the underlying reasons why today pubs are mainly dark, gloomy, and full of TV's that cost more than my car; instead of creating safe public drinking spaces full of culture for all to enjoy.


From the interiors of a pub to what's on tap, at least for my entire life, pubs have never taken a step back from the 'normal' conventions and dared to do things a little bit differently.

And this is why SPARKKE at The Whitmore, further from the fact that they're a female-led brewpub, is such an attractive venue to me; perfectly weaving the best of pub-culture (great beer, a stellar rooftop bar, delicious food to boot), with nuances of modernity with a 100% recyclable pink bar, an extensive vegan menu, and a publicly renown safe space for the queer community and minorities (with amazing attention to accessibility!).


The Live Art Fashion series at SPARKKE at The Whitmore shows that a pub can focus on local fashion (which 110% an art form and should be celebrated) further than just getting frocked up for Melbourne Cup. Actually, considering the social changes happening re horse racing, Live Art Fashion at The Whitmore is kind of the perfect new direction that we all should be heading in when integrating fashion art into the pub scene. 

On arrival, the ticket price also included two cocktails that we were able to try along with amazing nibbly-pub food that integrated pub favs with a little bit of fancy flair. 

The afternoon flowed with drinks, food and a mixture of art that included a live painting by @stiles.b (final piece pictured below), DJ's and fashion.

The Whitmore as a whole is reason enough to schedule your Saturday afternoon in advance, but Life Art Fashion was an incredible experience and I hope SPARKKE continues to be creative and innovative in their approach to pub events - because I'll be there!

He’s loud, crude and opinionated. He’s the Australian comedian that you either love or hate; there’s really no in between.

Alex Williamson is known to many as the “Loosest Aussie Bloke” around. The Adelaide born comedian is managed by Frontier Comedy now but started his career on YouTube and Facebook. While coming from more humble beginnings, his popularity has now grown to over 2.5 million social media followers, across a number of platforms.

Many describe Williamson as laidback, punchy and charismatic. However, I knew going into his latest show that I would need to mentally prepare myself for a series of unfiltered, blunt and even grotesque jokes.

The sold-out Fringe show started when the comedian stumbled onto the stage with a glass of red in his hand. He just giggled to himself, while the crowd roared with applause and laughed along with him.

His storytelling revolves around dark and extreme humour, paired with any topic, no matter how provocative or controversial. Nothing is off limits.

He’s outrageously inappropriate, yet still manages to turn dark subject matter into comedic gold. However, his shows are not for the faint-hearted, so if you’re easily offended, then I strongly urge you to walk the other way.

At just 24 years old, Neel Kolhatker is one of Australia’s youngest comedians. He’s been doing stand-up comedy at clubs and theatres across the country and around the world, since he won the Class Clowns competition, at the age of 15. The comedian’s popularity grew even further when he started posting videos on his YouTube channel too.

Kolhatker has yet again returned to the Adelaide Fringe, to showcase his comedic charm and talent with us all.

Supported by Frontier Comedy, the Sydney based comedian usually focuses on relationships, differences between cultures and politics, during his shows. He regularly pulls on his own Indian heritage, while mocking well-known stereotypes, in order to aid in his hilarious punchlines.

Kolhatker is able to replicate a plethora of accents and impressions, which adds to the authenticity of his stories. He frequently personifies his take on the typical ‘white girl’, ‘Indian’ and ‘misunderstood teenager’.

During the show, he regularly involved audience members and used their personal stories as further comedic material. Kolhatker does an excellent job of relating to his millennial based followers, and always finds a way to make the whole room crack up with laughter.

Neel Kolhatker is certainly a rising star in the comedic industry, and I’m sure he’ll continue to make us laugh for many more years to come.

Adelaide Fringe has smashed its box office record with an impressive 825,000 tickets sold, a 17 percent increase on last year – the biggest boost in recent years.

Organisers say the diversity and accessibility of this year’s program of 1326 events – along with great weather, a rising number of visitors and the introduction of e-ticketing – has contributed to the record-breaking ticket sales worth $19.4 million.

With the Fringe ending tomorrow night, festival-goers still have hundreds of free and ticketed events to choose from in the final two days – including their last chance to immerse themselves in the stunning Yabarra: Gathering of Light.
More than 200,000 people have already visited the free cultural experience down at the River Torrens near the University of Adelaide footbridge from 8.30pm on every night of the Fringe.

Adelaide Fringe Director and CEO Heather Croall, who oversaw her fourth Fringe this year, said she was particularly impressed with the calibre of events in this year’s festival and the level of support from the general public.

“The buzz around Adelaide has been absolutely electric and we are just blown away with what we’ve been able to achieve this year, from record-breaking ticket sales and improving accessibility to putting on one of the biggest celebrations of Indigenous culture that this city has ever seen,” Ms Croall said.

“We’re so proud of this year’s program and the reaction from audiences. It’s been really inspiring to see so many artists pushing boundaries and presenting ground-breaking work that people who otherwise feel marginalised can relate to. The party’s not over yet, though! We’re hoping for a fabulously successful closing weekend to put the icing on the cake of what has been a truly magical and unforgettable Fringe season.”

This weekend is also an opportunity to support the many smaller venues offering quality programming in this year’s Fringe, with many presenting shows recognised by the festival’s 2019 Weekly Awards.



These include Holden Street Theatres, the Noel Lothian Hall at Adelaide Botanic Garden, La Boheme, A Club Adelaide, The Mill, Nexus Arts, Rhino Room, The National Wine Centre, Live from Tandanya, Bakehouse Theatre, Treasury 1860 and The Garage International at Adelaide Town Hall.

Smaller venues made up 50 percent of ticket sales while the three major outdoor hubs (the Garden of Unearthly Delights, Gluttony and RCC Fringe) had the remaining 50 percent.

“One of the many reasons our festival is so unique is the way Fringe venues big and small – from RCC Fringe to the GC at Grand Central – pop up all over Adelaide’s CBD, suburbs and regional SA. We have hundreds of venues to explore, and getting out to as many as possible is an important part of the Fringe experience. I hope to see festival-goers spread out far and wide this weekend.”

Following the success of last year, Adelaide Fringe has again removed inside charges for tickets under $35 and halved the inside charge for all others, resulting in an amazing $17.5 million in box office settlements paid out to Fringe artists and venues. This is an injection into the arts direct from artists to audiences.

Adelaide Fringe also continued to improve on its accessibility initiatives, which this year included partnerships with Deaf Can:Do and the Royal Society for the Blind along with the appointment of a Diversity and Access Co-ordinator.

The 2019 Fringe on Tour saw Fringe performers pop up in IKEA Adelaide and Murray Bridge for the first time in addition to Port Adelaide, Rundle Mall, Adelaide Airport, Westfield shopping centres and as far away as Port Augusta (Desert Fringe).

Both in their third year, Fringe Mount Gambier and uneARTh Festival Whyalla Fringe are still on their way from March 22-31 and April 18-21 respectively.



Adelaide Fringe Board Chair David Minear said the 2019 Adelaide Fringe owed its success to the hard work of artists, venues, staff and volunteers along with the support of its audiences and corporate and government partners.

“So many people own this wonderful success. Of course, it starts with our talented and hard-working artists, unique venues and the dedicated Fringe team,” Mr Minear said. “A close second are the people of South Australia who whole-heartedly embrace all that the Adelaide Fringe has to offer year after year. This is indeed ‘the people’s festival’. We are also blessed to have such strong corporate support and also from the State Government. Our success is also their success.”

Continued support from Principal Partner BankSA saw Fringe-goers take advantage of BankSA’s Support Act program, which has so far seen more than 800 tickets sold to shows by independent and emerging artists by subsidising ticket prices to the public.

BankSA Chief Executive Nick Reade said Adelaide Fringe’s positive impact on South Australian businesses was one of the many reasons that BankSA was proud to have partnered with the festival for the past 14 years.

“It’s been amazing to see Adelaide come alive for the Fringe season and so many people supporting the Fringe – especially BankSA customers, who have enjoyed a wide range of benefits, such as 25 per cent off selected shows, priority access and other exclusive deals,” Mr Reade said.

“I’m anticipating that the record-breaking ticket sales will have translated into a significant economic boost for our state when Adelaide Fringe releases its Annual Review results later this year.”

Next year’s Adelaide Fringe will see the festival celebrate its 60th anniversary after first being held in 1960. Adelaide Fringe is calling on the public to share their favourite festival memories via an online survey (www.surveymonkey.com/r/adlfringe60).

Adelaide Fringe also recently announced that next year’s festival would host the Fringe World Congress, for which directors and delegates from more than 100 Fringe-style arts festivals around the world would converge on Adelaide.

Roll up, roll up! The circus is back in town!

Rouge has returned to Adelaide Fringe yet again. The award-winning show is a “decadent blend of sensational acrobatics, operatic cabaret, and tongue-in-cheek burlesque”.

The show itself is produced by Highwire Entertainment, a Melbourne-based production house.

Sexy, strong and sultry, are three words I’d use to describe this captivating “circus for grown-ups”.

I found myself on the edge of my seat, especially while watching the performers fly through the air and defy gravity.

The team of six provide the perfect entertainment package. The diva in red, Issie Hart, showcases her operatic skill and pitch throughout the show. Jessie Rootbeer personifies the famous “sexy lamp” from A Christmas Story and later treats the audience to a sensual aerial performance.


Annalise Moore displays a level of acrobatic skill like nothing I’ve seen. Her body moves and bends in ways that you wouldn’t deem possible. Lyndon Johnson successfully ascends a pyramid of chairs and Andre Augustus is the strength that holds the team together. Paul Westbrook is fabulously cheeky and flamboyant. His solo hoop act was truly magnificent.

Rouge really is a Fringe show that you won’t want to miss. Book a babysitter for the kids, and bring your friends and/or significant other along to enjoy a night filled with acrobatic skill, sex appeal, and great humour.

FINALE brought the tent down with a flawless display of Circus and Cabaret.

Blessing the Adelaide Fringe all the way from Berlin, the eight friends that define FINALE put on an exceptional entertaining performance of athleticism for a packed crowd on a Sunday night. 

FINALE was a performance that really had everything you would expect in a full-scale internationally renown Fringe show - full of good vibes, a combination of phenomenal dance moves, incredible stunts, live singing and a wide-spread emotion of anticipation at every turn from the adoring audience. 

Be amazed as FINALE takes you on an adventure of an unpredictable and quirky nature, which leaves everyone in the room wondering what’s coming next. The acrobats and musicians test their bodies to show just how far they can be pushed all while following a hilarious storyline. 


The room was filled full of gasps and ‘OH MY GOD'S’ as the audience gets involved, applauding these incredible entertainers right to the finish line. Smoke machines, Jazz, and a brilliant drum player makes you wonder whether you might really have been transported to an underground bar somewhere in the city of Berlin.

The audience was engaged through a combination of friendship, togetherness, and trust coupled with a variety of circus talents and dynamic banter. With only a limited amount of shows remaining, grab a loved one and make sure to get yourself a ticket to ‘Finale’ while the Fringe is still going. 

A show that’s a perfect start to a night out, you might even be fortunate enough to get a shot of vodka during the show!

This year, the Adelaide Fringe has brought along a whole new spiel of female-focused and empowering performances - with Baby Got Back being one of the highlights for this broadening genre. 

Featuring a cast comprised of dancers, strippers, showgirls, puppeteers, comedians, and burlesque performers, Baby Got Back perfectly blends Cabaret with political performance to showcase the beauty and societal inequality of the female form. 

A strong message that was immediately woven into the storytelling of the performance were those on stage wearing giant kitten heads and tags that read ‘dyke’, ‘whore’, ‘slut’ and ‘bitch’, as well as the donations towards 'money' that they encouraged the audience to tip them during the show which donated the current gendered wage gap.

A more salacious performance that is what's normally expected from the Fringe, it's one to see to be believed. Messaging that they touch on during the show includes self-image, gendered violence, and inequality amongst preaching the beauty of what it's like to be a 'size queen' and what that means to them.

For the perfectly baked recipe of feminism, political messaging, fun, talent and sheer performance art - we have no choice but to give Baby Got Back...
