Mortal Engines stuns with visually breathtaking cinematography and impressive CGI moments. Conceptually strong and speedily paced, this action-packed steampunk fantasy was built for the big screen. However, despite the grandiose imagery and persistence to remain as loud as possible, the execution of the plot is where this film falls short.

Adapted from Phillip Reeves iconic novel, Mortal Engines is set over two thousand years from now in a post-apocalyptic world of moving cities. One of those tractions is London, a city built upon remnants of the English capitals architectural structures. Think Tottenham Station and St Paul’s Cathedral all on its own mobile engine driving on a landscape with a whole lot of Mad Max vibes.

London is home to Tom Natsworthy, a young and passionate historian, played by the adorable Robert Sheehan. Tom’s character is laced in a veil of innocence, which is certainly a far cry from Sheehan’s earlier acting role in Misfits. In a chance encounter, Tom meets the enigmatic Hester Shaw as she finds herself forced aboard London with a number of captives. Hester, played by Icelandic actress Hera Hilmar, has lived in The Outlands for all her life and carries an elusive past. What comes next is an epic tale of adventure throughout this Neo-Victorian extravaganza.

Mortal Engines stuns with visually breathtaking cinematography and impressive CGI moments. This is where the film truly shines. Conceptually strong and speedily paced, this action-packed steampunk fantasy was built for the big screen. However, despite the grandiose imagery and persistence to remain as loud as possible, the execution of the plot is where this film falls short.

Adapting an epic fantasy novel into 2 hours of screen time is awfully challenging – but in Mortal Engines you can truly feel the compression of the story. Information is hastily spoon fed, weakening the script to a very predictable narrative. Many subplots are introduced and consequently abandoned, leaving the viewer unable to naturally explore the story’s lore. Several interesting characters are proven to be otherwise forgettable as scenes chop and change. It is difficult to simply keep up with the pace of this film.

Anna Fang, played by Korean actress Jihae is a badass who deserves far more screen time than she’s offered. An anti-tractionist aviator who tears up the skies, with a hefty price on her arrest, her mystique stays true as there is almost too much left to the imagination. Thaddeus Valentine, played by Hugo Weaving and revealed unsurprisingly as the main antagonist, has such little character exploration that the viewer is left questioning if there were actual motives behind his monstrous actions.

While a film of this depth would have benefited by being broken up into a series, Mortal Engines is still a bold and visually dynamic watch. Make sure you catch this one in a cinema to truly enjoy the visuals on a large scale.

We all love things made with love that make us feel like a million dollars… especially if those things don’t cost a million dollars to buy!

These very ‘things’ I speak of, all belong to a little boutique shop named Indy Love Co.

Founder of Indy Love Co., Helen, has a passion for making quality and affordable hand-made items. Moving from Melbourne to Adelaide over 10 years ago, Helen began creating unique and wonderful clothing items, handbags and accessories.

Originally an online boutique, Indy Love Co. decided to expand into the physical realm by opening a store in the beautiful suburb of Prospect.

Now that they are now part of the amazing shopping district on Prospect Road, Indy Love Co. are now involved in the Christmas on Prospect Campaign.

With multiple, stunning hand-made products such as earrings, bags, reeds, candles and more on display, Indy Love Co. creates the perfect combination of style and a warm environment for those who walk through the door.

Helen teamed up with Simone from Diamond Management Group to host a fun-filled evening, with flowing champagne, a rustic grazing table (with the most amazing cheese, might we add), products on display that were also for purchase, as well as goody bags and a prize draw.

It’s safe to say that Indy Love Co., along with its products, is nothing short of special and unique.

Be sure to check out our photos below to see what Indy Love Co. is like. Or, alternatively, visit Indy Love Co. in person, as they are always happy to help!

Aussie based singer-songwriter and producer, Baltimöre, has officially released her highly anticipated EP, Metamorphosis, just one year after her explosive Falls Festival performance in 2017.

Named after Frank Kafka’s classic slipstream novella, Metamorphosis gives us moody and reflective vibes that exhibit the level of sophistication and complexity behind the artist herself.

The twenty-four-year-old has recently been able to create three smash hits that officially made their debut on the Soundcloud platform, Monday night.

If you're about to jump onto Baltimöre's Soundcloud, get ready to be immersed and overwhelmed by the sheer quality and creativity of this artists growingly popular content.

Over the last six months, Elevate Music has had the pleasure of attending a handful of the Electronic-pop artist's stellar shows and we can't get enough!

Here's what BALTIMĂ–RE had to say...

ELEVATE: How would you describe your sound and who inspires you?
Baltimöre: I'd say it's quite dark emotional-pop.

My music is a way of dealing with the changes in my life and growing up, so my personal experiences tend to have a strong influence on my sound.
I’ve always been inspired by artists such as Prince, Banks, Marvin Gaye, Tracy Chapman, Radiohead, J.S. Bach, FKA Twigs, Timberland, Ani Lou, and many, many more...

ELEVATE: How long have you been producing music?
Baltimöre: I have been producing music since I was 14 on a program called FL Studio.

Looking back, I used to think I was amazing, at the time but I listen to the tracks now and I just think, that ain't cool! [Laughing]

ELEVATE: Well you've obviously come a long way then! How do you feel your sound has developed looking back to when you were starting out?
Baltimöre: I think it changes with certain relationships I go through with certain people that I meet and situations that I've been thrown into, whether that was self-inflicted or, I don't know… Music is definitely a way of dealing with my growing pains.

"My music is a way of dealing with the changes
in my life and growing up"

ELEVATE: For you personally, what's it like being a part of the Adelaide music scene?
Baltimöre: I love it! I've met so many wonderful people and I've made so many treasured friends. Adelaide is where I belong.

ELEVATE: What was it like collaborating with Pink Wasabi? And are you planning to collaborate with anyone else in the future?
Baltimöre: Yeah, she's really cool! She's got a really different sound and our styles seem to work really well together.

At the moment I'm working on a video and single release with, Jess from China Roses, and I've also been collaborating with Daarsya which has been really fun.

Pink Wasabi and Baltimore

ELEVATE: Thanks so much for catching up with our team, and we can’t wait to hear what you have in store for us in 2019!

Baltimöre: Thank you!

In previous interviews with the ELEVATE, it has been suggested that Metamorphosis may be a 'warm-up' for something bigger for fans to look forward to next year!

To listen to Metamorphosis you can tune in on Soundcloud and stay up to date with the latest news you can follow Baltimöre on Facebook and Instagram

Sfera’s Park Suites and Convention Centre is one of Adelaide’s leading accommodation and wedding venues. They specialise in wedding receptions, ceremonies, events, functions and also offer accommodation. The Adelaide venue has recently opened their Paradiso Cocktail Bar, offering a range of Mediterranean dishes and unique cocktails.

The Paradiso Cocktail Bar is one of the newest additions to Sfera. We recently attended the launch night, which involved an evening filled with food and cocktails, overlooking the picturesque parklands.  Pre-event sangrias and tapas were enjoyed at Sfera’s Boca Chica Bar, before making our way down to Paradiso.

We were treated to a whole spread of Mediterranean flavours, along with some unique cocktails and other delicious treats. The Hidden Treasure Cocktail was a sweet surprise. Served in a seashell, inside a treasure chest, this tantalising concoction had my taste buds dancing with aromatic flavours of Frangelico, cinnamon, blue vodka, and milk. The new bar has all of your favourites, along with some exclusive additions, so be brave and try something new. Why not pair your drink with a Sicilian Lemon Tart with Double Cream or a Chocolate Fondant with Vanilla Bean Ice cream? All desserts and cocktails are just $9 every Friday.

Paradiso features natural light with picturesque parkland views, a foliage floral chandelier, and an illuminated private bar. Delicately enhanced with German wallpaper, this intimate space is the perfect location for a wedding reception or casual drinks with the girls. 30 - 70 guests can enjoy a cocktail affair in this inviting space, or you can seat up to 50 guests for a function style setting.

Open the doors and find Paradiso today.

Thanks for having us, Michael!

Opening hours are Friday to Saturday from 12:00pm – late, and Sunday from 10:15am – 2:00pm.

Did you know we have some of the most talented designers living with us in South Australia?

If the Curating Chaos UNISA Grad Show is anything to go by, we are officially spoiled for choice when it comes to designers that can deliver design with heart, soul, and most importantly, smarts.

So, why Curating Chaos?

"When we see design, we rarely see the journey. Finished work looks so effortless, despite the chaos that designers experience through the process.

All the scribbles, brainstorming, tiny refinements, late hours, and messy workspaces. Curating Chaos is a reflection of the fluidity, energy, and dynamic nature of the design process and how life is a balance of order and chaos."

You can check out ALL the graduates here
but read on to see a few of my favourite selected artists!

Maria Dizazzo @maria.makesthings

This quirky and mindful designer has a background in Marketing, making her designs not only pleasing to the eye but strategic with intention. Her personal branding of pink and red makes her on-trend, and her personal best-friendship with the author has absolutely zero relation to why she's top of this list.

Ben Neale @neale.design

This multi-talented designer had one of my favourite projects come to fruition. As a practicing designer at Pirate Life Brewery, you can find Ben's recognisable works on the cans of brews sold all over Australia. The fact that a young designer's works are being featured on a great SA businesses product - warms my heart!

Pirate Life #1.jpg

Emily Renner @emrennerdesign

Em's modern twist on design breathes fresh air into elements like to-go packaging and corporate logo's. Her "grazengo" packaging design was one of my favourite completed projects from the exhibition - making me want to buy one on my way out!

Hamish Cock @hamishmatthew.designer

As I work day-to-day with media outlets, Hamish's "square mile" typographic website really resonated with me! The modern take on a traditionally cluttered online medium let the words speak for themselves - and when implemented into real usage, would provide a great platform for real journalism, the likes of which we haven't seen in a while.

Astor + Tyne is a proud South Australian urban chic label, designed by Nicola Unwin. The garments can take the wearer from work to dinner with the girls, all while wearing the same outfit.

Made in Australia, through Ethical Clothing Australia (ECA), each garment is designed, sketched and edited right here in Adelaide. There is also a huge focus on the use of natural fibers, quality, and affordability.

We recently got a sneak peek at the High Summer ’19 Collection, during a Parade where new designs and garments were showcased. There was a nice array of soft and neutral colours, with some garments using bamboo and linen fabrics. On the night we also enjoyed a scrumptious grazing table, nicely paired with bubbles too.
