Showcasing an all-star cast and boasting an absolutely hilarious trailer, sports “dramedy” Fighting With My Family is soon to hit the big screens and if there’s one thing for certain – it’s sure to be a knockout!

Based on a true story, Fighting With My Family follows the Knight family – a rough and rowdy household of wrestlers hailing from little old Norwich in the UK.

Siblings Saraya-Jade and Zak Knight have always had wrestling in their blood, working alongside retired wrestler parents Ricky and Julia to run their local World Association of Wrestling (WAW).

With big dreams of becoming pro wrestlers, Zak “Zodiak” and Saraya (wrestling under the name Paige) receive an offer to try-out for the WWE, however, only Paige is successful and is forced to face a new, cut-throat and no-holds-barred world of wrestling alone.

From dull and dreary England, Paige is whisked halfway across the globe to sunny California where she encounters harsh wrestling coaches, judgemental models posing as wrestlers, and jealousy from brother Zak.

Young breakout actress Florence Pugh packs a punch as Saraya-Jade or “Raya”, with dashing Scotsman Jack Lowden by her side as brother Zak. British comedy legend Nick Frost delivers countless knee-slapping one-liners as father “Rowdy Ricky”, whilst Game of Thrones’ very own queen Lena Headey plays mean yet maternal mother Julia “Sweet Saraya”.

Veteran comedian Vince Vaughn returns to the big screen as WWE coach Hutch Morgan, whose harsh tactics and rigorous training leads Paige to star in NXT and eventually become the youngest ever Diva’s Champion at the age of 21.

The film also features several cameos from producer and WWE legend Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who holds a special connection to the story as he too came from a family of wrestlers known as the WWE Dynasty’s Anoa’i clan.

Fighting With My Family transports audiences on a rollercoaster ride (or more like a wrestling match) of emotions: poignant and emotional at one moment, then outrageously hilarious the next!

Exclusive advanced screenings of Fighting With My Family will be held on Wednesday 13 March at 6:30pm at Event Cinemas (Marion and Arndale) as well as GU Filmhouse (Adelaide and Glenelg). Fighting With My Family officially hits cinemas on March 21.

Suspense. Spine-tingles. Jump scares, upcoming psychological thriller Greta well and truly delivers a generous dose of all of the above, leaving audiences biting their nails on the edge of their seats.

Directed by well-renowned Irish film-maker Neil Jordan, the mysterious mind behind the 1994 cult classic Interview with the Vampire, Greta settles in a spot somewhere between horror, drama, and psychological thriller.

ChloĂ« Grace Moretz delivers an empathy-inducing performance as Frances McCullen, a doe-eyed and naĂŻve young woman who moves to New York with her roommate Erica (Maika Monroe) following the loss of her late mother.

Frances stumbles upon a handbag left behind on the subway and traces it back to its owner Greta: a seemingly frail, harmless and incredibly lonely widower with a charming Parisian accent.

The more time Frances spends with Greta, the more she notices her quirky eccentricities: her tragic family backstory, the strange banging noises coming from her “neighbours”, and her cupboard of identical “lost” handbags complete with stranger’s names and phone numbers attached.

What follows is a severe case of stalker-itis. Much like Joe’s infatuation with Beck in the Netflix hit TV show ‘You’, Greta quickly becomes obsessed with Frances, following her every move with a hawk-like gaze around town, to work and even to her apartment.

Greta’s maternal instinct turns manic when she drugs and kidnaps Frances, locking her away in a secret, eerily-decorated little girl’s room. Often bound, tied and gagged for hours in the confines of the claustrophobic room, Frances endures psychological and physical abuse ranging from piano lessons resulting in the old ruler-on-the-knuckles… to being thrown in “the box”.

Will detectives see through Greta’s little old lady charm? Will her roommate and father notice that something is amiss? Will Frances live to tell the tale? You’ll find no spoilers in this film review, so you’ll just have to watch the movie to find out for yourself.

Greta officially hits theatres on Thursday 28 February, so be sure to snap up tickets at an Event, Palace Nova, Wallis or Reading cinema near you!

I might not be in the target audience for Amity's show, FORTIFIED, but her message for women is universal - through life, love, and loss, you can find a strength inside of yourself that you never knew you had.

I wrote a review for Amity's show, 39 Forever, at the 2018 Adelaide Fringe. Last years show was fun, playful and inspiring.

For 2019, FORTIFIED is raw, vulnerable and powerful.

The show opens with a fairytale. A Princess, and Prince and Happily Ever After - or so the Princess thought.

With her self-written songs and personal experiences, Amity walks us through her life, and inevitably how she's changed since being the hopeful young 19-year-old who fell in love for the very first time.

Now, a divorced performer and mother of two (and these labels don't fully encapsulate her), Amity sheds insight into Tinder (something I found out the bulk of married women are extremely intrigued about Haha), and what it's like to be dating again (along with the extensive pre-date routine of showering, shaving, tanning) and how sometimes if you want to bang the hot gym-guy... you make the effort to go to Kmart and buy new sheets because your Bondi Sands has rubbed off onto your bed at home... and what else is a girl to do?

PC: Alice Healy Photography
On top of the amazing performances and storyline, there is noticeable effort and time behind the details of the show. From the on-stage banter between Amity and her Musical Director, Jamie Burgess, to the way Amity interacts with the audience - flawless would be a good description.

I read a review by The Advertiser that tore the performance to shreds by saying Amity's 'textbook relatable stories seem to add in an air of cheesiness'. I think the way the reviewer minimised the messages of the show to insist that Amity is pandering to the 'middle-aged' demographic is equal parts out-of-touch and insulting. Firstly, the media is very good at telling us that 50% of the population is some niche demographic that holds no weight e.g. when was the last time you heard about Menopause in the media? Seriously we're pretty much all going to go through it and NO-ONE TALKS ABOUT IT.

Secondly, as someone who has first-hand witnessed a family's marriage breakdown that's been broiled in domestic violence and financial abuse, the performance struck a chord with me personally, as a 24-year-old, single woman. So yeah, fuck anyone who wants to push down women when they're publicly talking about doing things that society at every step tells them not to do.

Anyone who's experienced a marriage dissolution would agree it's a warzone no matter the circumstances and Amity's show gives the audience a chance to project their own sadness and hurt through her music that can provide emotional output and build confidence to those who need it the most.

39 Forever had us leaving the show after dancing in our seats. FORTIFIED had the audience leaving the show with something more powerful; the insight and comfort in knowing you're not alone when you need to stand up for yourself and demand to be treated better when following your heart.

Scaled sex the musical

I couldn't help but wonder... does the perfect Fringe show exist? In an age of so many shows, so little time, how does a city girl know which performance to commit to... and which production will leave her un-loved, unfulfilled and unsatisfied?

I can say with all certainty, that Sex and The Musical did not disappoint.

In fact, I absolutely LOVED IT.

Sex and the Musical is a prequel that follows TV sweetheart (and antagonist) Carrie Bradshaw, and her need to quickly find a group of friends that fulfill her Sassy, Smart and Sweet requirements... she is the Sexy one after all.

I didn't know what the expect with this show, and with the performance being held in the front bar for Treasury 1860, it, by all appearances, was an odd choice for a musical. But it all came together when the show started and the use of the bar space was one of my favourite parts of the performance. No area was unused, every step was meticulously performed by the actors and the up-close and personal aspect of the show made it even funnier in most instances.

The cast were equal parts perfect for their roles and hilarious. Although the show was small, as an audience member the best part is a cast that fully commits to their character because it channels realism in an intimate setting. Seriously, there were times that I felt like I was watching the show itself because the actors had their characters mannerisms down to a fine art. The entire cast was exceptional and their performances had me in constant giggles throughout their numbers and exchanges.

Charlotte York and her hopeful new suitor

The musical numbers that were included did not fall short... they were actually catchy. They were actually toe-tapping enough for me to want to listen to again! The costumes were like that straight of the dressing room for the SATC cast - with a touch of visual exaggeration to really drive home the underlying comedy aspect of the performance.

Above all, the plot was genuinely good. It's easy for parody performances to create a show that jabs at the original the entire time and swaps subject matter for satire. But in this case, as much as the show was completely hilarious, the plot was something I would actually expect from Sex and The City and was a storyline that I personally found extremely compelling.

If you're a fan of Sex and The City, do yourself a favour and grab some tickets to the two remaining shows available, sip on a cosmo while you're there and enjoy a solidly great performance.

It's a tale as old as time - Man is born. Man searches for love. Man becomes an alcoholic and hosts a self-deprecating 'Bachelor' play on words, Adelaide Fringe comedy show. It's a classic story.

The Zachelor with Zack Watson doesn't just provide an hour of laughs, it also comes with over the line humor that you'll be worried to laugh at (and always will), and an automatic sense of belonging as you follow Zach's journey over the last decade which includes moving to Adelaide from the country and managing bars in the city-centre.

It's evident that Zach has mastered the skills needed to execute a quality fringe show. He beautifully sets up and executes running jokes, makes the audience feel at home (with a few cheeky shots of gin for the audience during), and delivers a form of true-blue Aussie humor that I find can be heavily censored, and, therefore, lose impact with the more conventional comics.

Zach pushes the line of what we can laugh at as Australians, but perfectly navigates subject issues like bogan culture and what it's like to be the butt of the universes' joke (especially when alcohol's involved).

It's not often that you walk away from a small comedy show haven laughed the entire time and learned a few facts along the way - did you know that the Rhino Room venue 'Hell's Kitchen' used to be the kitchen for the first Fasta Pasta in Adelaide? Did you know that Fasta Pasta sold it's IP and now it's a chain of restaurants in Victoria called La Porchetta? Did you know that La Porchetta has a one-star review of trip advisor with the title 'Complete Garbage?'. I didn't... until I googled it to find the hyperlink for this fun fact I got from Zach and I now feel like a better person because of it. I'm not sure if I enjoyed this more because I fucking love pasta, or because I love learning little facts about our world that I didn't know to begin with. Either way, like my favourite Carbonara - these fun facts were delivered and delicious.

I'm excited to see Zach grow as a comedian, and although his show has concluded for the Fringe season, I would highly recommend keeping an eye out for Zach on the Adelaide comedy scene and grabbing tickets to his next show which can be found on his Facebook page.

HAVE A TASTE OF YUMMY!

Written by Maria Dizazzo

YUMMY DELUXE is 60 minutes of guaranteed delight, comedy and sex appeal. Blending burlesque, cabaret, drag and circus performances into one, it is truly an eclectic femme extravaganza.

Held at Garden of Unearthly Delights in a venue appropriately called ‘The Box’, YUMMY begins with a high-energy group dance to Janelle Monae’s glorious hit, ‘Make Me Feel’. The talented cast was hell-bent on entertaining everyone in the room, dancing along to every beat and setting the bar high for the night.

The fabulous hostess with the mostess, Valerie Hex, welcomed the evening with an acknowledgment to the Kaurna people, the original owners of the land. Valerie lavished the night with show-stopping outfit after outfit, tongue-in-cheek social commentary, and encouraged the audience to unleash the femme within you.

Scaled yummy 2019 2

The first act of the night, the enigmatic Zelia Rose, named the #1 Burlesque Artist Worldwide, dazzled with a glittery black and white ensemble, high ponytail and lashes for days. Recently touring with the maverick of the burlesque world Dita Von Teese, Zelia struts her stuff onstage proving why she really is #1.

Hula hoop and pole dancing sensation, Hannie Helsden, amazed the crowd with her nimbleness. Twirling one hoop after the next till they spun like a giant slinky around her body, the audience roared, and she gave her best wide-mouthed smile.

The stunning Jandruze stepped out in a risquĂ© leather ensemble and showed us how to really make sandwiches, one layer at a time, motioning an audience member on-stage to complete the dish.

Joni in the Moon and her powerhouse pipes rung out the night, the Perth singer hit some impressive notes that truly amplified the room. I took a photo with the electric lady after the show, to which she said, “I’m singing right now, I’m singing!”

Expert trapeze artist Jarrod Dewey, the newest addition to YUMMY, had true endurance. Twisting into unbelievable positions with ease, all the while in the most sensational hot-red stiletto heels.

The YUMMY cast engaged the audience from beginning to end. Encouraging us to stomp our feet and clap our hands, and most importantly, teaching us how to truly slay. If you’re not a fan of a provocative cabaret, it may not be for you, but this multi-award-winning show can entertain even the tamest of audience members. At the end of the night, the crowd jumped up for a well-deserved standing O, ending the night with a bang.

YUMMY DELUXE is entertaining, fun, and definitely not one to miss this Fringe season! Tickets and more information are available at the Adelaide Fringe Festival’s official website here.

Scaled untitled design

Have you ever felt like life can leave you feeling like a fucking mess? And all you can do to save face is kiss boys, drink vodka, and watch Ru Paul's Drag Race on repeat while hungover in bed? If this screams 'relatable content', then you need to see 'Confetti: Pretty but a bit of a mess'!

Ashy Rose is a triple threat powerhouse vocalist whose Fringe show is packed with laughter, glamour, and the harsh realities of growing up and always wanting more... and then fucking getting it!

'Confetti: Pretty but a bit of a mess' takes the audience through modern adulting in all its displeasures. From debt and cheaters to self-confidence issues and binge drinking, it's not hard that even the most put together fringe go-er can't deny that we're all just hiding how much of a fucking mess we are on a daily basis.

Ashy runs us through rewritten hits from Britney to Kesha, using pop melodies to comedically usher us through her coming-of-age musical. Songs that detail how she had a crush on her gay best friend in high school (I've crushed on many a man who didn't swing my way), or how her dating life lead to snatching a phone out of her temporary beau's hand and stashing it in the freezer for lack of attention.

Ashy's story is actually similar to mine. Growing up, I always wanted to be part of the "beautiful people", to attend the fashion shows and flirt with boys for free drinks (mainly). In high school, I was bullied like Ashy, and over the years took control over what I could, like my appearance and talents... and became the person I always looked up to. What I think Ashy does a really good job at in her show is spreading the message that you can be beautiful, inside and out, but whether you want to look like a drag queen or not, you still deserve love and to be treated with respect.

I wear my blonde (and infamously, dyed) hair like a crown, and whether I'm in the front row or holding my hair back from the toilet bowl, being true to yourself is the most important thing when you're feeling like confetti... a fucking mess.

Scaled jackson v

Written by Tayla Giles

Whether you’re a diehard Michael Jackson devotee or a Janet Jackson fangirl, Jackson vs Jackson brings one and all together to pay tribute to the musically talented siblings and their timeless unforgettable hits.

Held under the big top of The Flamingo in Gluttony, Jackson vs Jackson takes audiences on a one-hour journey through MJ and Janet’s musical evolution across the decades of their lengthy careers in the music industry.

MJ may be the King of Pop, but the vocal powerhouse that is Charmaine Jones takes the crown as Australia’s choral queen – even kicking the performance off by sitting on a stunning white throne and looking as regal as ever.

Amongst her gusty solos, the musically gifted Jones conducts Australia’s leading choral ensemble known as the Gospo Collective; a full instrumental band and a supporting choir, resulting in a packed stage just bursting to the brim with talent.

Dressed in sequined suits and grinning from ear to ear, the young stars from The Jones Juniors also melted hearts with their adorable singing and choreography skills.

The show also features a number of passionate solo performances from several members of the Gospo Collective, including the gutsy vocals of the blogging world’s very own Joanna behind @the__style__file on Instagram.

No matter if you’re ‘Black or White’, Jackson vs Jackson is a sure-fire showstopper that is sure to get everyone up on their feet and dancing the night away.

With 26 shows spanning across four weeks of the Adelaide Fringe, Jackson vs Jackson will be rocking The Flamingo in Gluttony from February 20 – March 17.

Scaled nikki 800x800

Written by Taysharna Berger

If Barbie’s Dream House dream house was a mansion, it’s only fitting that Bad Barbie would find a home in Gluttony. Nikki Osborne’s Bad Barbie is a modern superhero with a drink in her hand and her middle finger up.

As a Barbie obsessed millennial, Nikki Osborne’s Bad Barbie is the pink, blonde, tell-it-like-it-is icon I didn’t grow up with but wish I did. She’s sassy, smart and knows how to tell a #MeToo joke in a sequin dress like a true comedy queen; and when it comes to controversy, she’s not afraid to drop a few Harvey Weinstein jokes between musical numbers donning a glitter cowboy hat and spilling the tea on all our favourite childhood toys.

Nikki Osborne's original, creative and refreshing take on the world through Bad Barbie’s eyes makes it a stand out show that proves yet again women can be funny AND sexy.

If you’re looking for a comedian who isn’t ashamed to say they've thought about being on the bachelor, they wish they had a more lucrative Me Too experience and sometimes, they’ve just had enough of everyone’s shit, then Nikki Osborne's Bad Barbie is for you.

Oh, and I’ll never look at my Childhood Barbie collection the same again.

"SEE the show or BE the show!"

Presented by Isaac Lomman

The initial assumption made about a hypnotist performance might be a group of planted audience members being plucked onto the stage and proceeding to cluck like a chicken.

We can tell you that HYPNOSIS [Live] by Isaac Lomman is as skilled in his profession as he is in converting the most skeptical participants.

Returning to his seventh Adelaide Fringe season, Lomman has been able to put together a show that ticks off every box for a good performance. HYPNOSIS [Live] is entertaining, unexpected, and most importantly, challenges the audience’s pre-conceived conceptions on an idea and re-educates them on how fun and real hypnosis can be.

During HYPNOSIS [Live], twelve lucky audience members bravely marched onto the stage to experience the show like few ever have before.

Image may contain: 1 person

The most interesting part of the show is how the on-stage participants need to be susceptible to the hypnosis. People who ‘fight’ the hypnosis or don’t fall in deep enough, then don’t participate – leaving the hypnosis experience to those completely under his spell.

In the hour-long show, we saw people who were instructed to steal facial expressions, leading the victim to start frantically grabbing the face of the person next to them; those who were fully convinced that they were the ‘best dancers in the world’ and proceeded to boogie down to “Baby Shark”; and even someone who was spellbound enough to fall in love on-stage and shower the focus of their affections in lei’s.

At the expense of the on-stage participants, the audience responded with shocks and laughs throughout the evening. From HYPNOSIS [Live], we’re sure Isaac’s victims had a great time – even if they don’t remember it.

If you’re looking to be entertained this Fringe and to challenge your idea of reality and live hypnotism, this is one show we thoroughly suggest you see.
